Coming Events at Calvary

Community Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 7 from 8-10am  Adults at $5, Children are $2 and Seniors are $4 for pancakes, sausages, juice, and coffee. Come have a great time with good food and great friends. It's a great way to start your day!

ON-GOING OPPORTUNITIES AND MINISTRIES AT CALVARY: During the year Calvary offers a variety of events, some ongoing and some one time opportunities. We invite our visitors, friends and new members to find something special in which to participate. Perhaps you have an event to add to our calendar or a class or group that you would like to start. We would be delighted to help in any way we can.

Online Book Study for Women ~ One chapter a week is covered with an on-line discussion. E-mail Beth Posey,

Book Study for Men ~ This group meets on Thursday evening at 7pm in the Small Meeting Room (across from the church office). Please email to indicate you'd like to participate, or if you have any questions.

6 Things We Should Know About God - a study led by Pastor Matthew on Wednesday evening at 7pm in the parlor.

Sunday School Classes:

  • Adult Sunday Morning Study at 9:45am led by Rev. Dr. Natalie Houghtby-Haddon: Everyone is welcome. Please join us! We are continuing the Covenant study with part three: Trusting. 

  • The Life I've Always Wanted at 9:45am led by Jessica Chen and others in Classroom 1

Church Prayer Team~ Members of the church and others with a concern for the welfare of the church are welcome to join the team.  We offer God praise, and seek His forgiveness for individual sin and the sins of the church. Prayer requests are honored from any source. We know that prayer makes a difference. Prayers received during Sunday worship are the focus of the following week. Contact Dottie Cumings (through the church office at 703-892-5185) to be included on the Prayer Team.

Choirs: there are several to choose from.

  • Chancel Choir: High School Youth and Adults meet Thursday evening (except July and August) in the Choir Room from 8-9:30pm and sing each Sunday at 11am worship (except during August).

  • Occasional Choir: High School Youth and Adults meet at 8am in the Choir Room on the morning scheduled to sing at 8:30am worship. Contact Wayne Kemp (wnkemp(at) to be added to the e-mail list.

  • Junior Choir: Children and youth 2nd Grade and older meet at 9:30am in the Choir Room and sing at 11am Worship Service about six times per year.

  • Adult Handbell Choir: High School Youth and Adults meet Thursday evening 7-8pm in the Choir Room and play about 6 times per year at the 8:30am and 11am Worship Service.

  • Youth Handbell Choir: Youth 5th Grade and older meet Sunday at 12:15pm in the Choir Room and play about 4 times per year at the 11am Worship Service

Wednesday Night Dinners: Because Christmas and New Year's Day are on Wednesday this year, there will not be a dinner until after the first of the year.

Each Wednesday evening at 6:30 gather for a catered dinner and fellowship in Harris Hall, our Grant Street building. The cost is $6.00 and reservations should be made through the church office no later than noon on Wednesday at 703-892-5185. We offer a fun evening of fellowship with friends and neighbors and a delicious dinner at a reasonable price.

Comfort Shawl Ministry: The women of Calvary have developed a wonderful comfort shawl ministry. These hand made shawls are given to those members and friends who are ill or unable to join us in worship. If you know someone who would benefit and be blessed by such a gift please contact Molly Sessions at .

Children and Youth Ongoing Opportunities: Each Sunday we offer nursery and Sunday School during the 8:30 service, children's choir at 9:30, Sunday School for all ages at 9:45, and Children's Church and Student Worship at 11:00 AM. Please contact Beth Posey, or 703-892-4112, Kathy Harrington, or Christy Owens, for more information. Please remember that the youth program always needs adult help: DRIVERS - To bring kids from Alexandria and Arlington areas and take them back home - car-pooling is great! CHAPERONS - Especially for events away from Calvary UMC. SNACKS - Youth like to eat and drink! Please consider providing some snacks (chips, cookies, sodas, water bottles, even fruit and veggies) for some of our events.
