Below is a preview of this coming Sunday's message.
In my youth, I remember singing a song that began “I was glad when they said unto me: let us go into the House of the Lord.” I don’t know if I knew then that it was taken from Psalm 122, but I knew it was about the happiness we should feel going to church. Years later, I learned a simple but haunting chant: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem”- again taken from Psalm 122.
Psalm 122 was basic to the faith of Jews- used by pilgrims coming to Jerusalem- and is basic to Christian faith as well. As many come back to church from summer vacationing, what could be more appropriate than affirming “I was glad when they said…let us go to the Lord’s house?”
Ps. 1222 is so appropriate as we near the Jewish new year. And at a time when U.S., Israeli and Palestinian leaders meet to try to find a peace agreement for Israel, what could be more critical than for us to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem?” Read Psalm 122, and let’s talk about it Sunday.
